A Vegan Birthday
Birthdays can be challenging if you’re vegan and looking to take your friends or family out for a meal, but as they are a chance to celebrate YOU, they should be anything but limiting. In fact, I find that birthdays provide the perfect opportunity to share the experience of veganism with others, and it can be a wonderful introduction to the abundance of options available to those who choose to avoid animal products.
As I was navigating the experience of planning out my birthday celebration with friends, I found it challenging to consider the needs of everyone while ensuring that everyone had the best experience. In particular, while I thought it would be selfish to prevent others from ordering the food that they wanted to have, the other half of me believed that it was the right thing to do - as anything otherwise would be antithetical towards my fundamental morals. Eventually, although I liked the idea of ‘forcing’ everyone to experience a vegan meal, I settled with renting out a venue and leaving their meal choices up to themselves. This way, I could avoid that problem while continuing to show others around the most challenging component of veganism: the desserts.
Considering that you’re likely going to spend money anyway, this creates the perfect gateway towards handing people the first taste of veganism. Although cupcakes from The Cakery are extremely pricey, my justification is that I wanted to provide the best experience for those who never considered veganism and to demonstrate that it requires very little sacrifice and no flavour is compromised. This way, their (negative) impression of veganism may immediately be challenged, and, hopefully, they will continue to believe that vegan food can be delicious.
